2015:

On 23rd March 2015, international poultry scientist Mr Arnold Elson from ADAS gave a talk at Ege University Animal Science Department on ‘Poultry welfare in intensive and extensive production systems’.

In the first part of his talk, Mr Elson reviewed health issues of concern in different broiler production systems such foot pad dermatitis, hock joint, and breast. In the second part of his talk he explored differences in mortality rates between the layer production systems of enriched cages, aviary and barns, free range, veranda systems, and organic production as one important measure of welfare.

The meeting was well attended by undergraduate and graduate students and staff from Ege and at the end of the presntation there was a very productive and engaging discussion of the issues raised, moderated by Professor Sezen Özkan (Ege’s UFAW LINK), who arranged the visit.

2014:

With support from the LINK scheme, Ege student Askin Güney was able to attend and participate in the 10th National Congress of Animal Science Students hold in Erciyes University, Seyrani Agriculture Faculty in Kayseri-Turkey, 23-25 April 2014 (http://www.zootekni2014.com/). Askin presented work she carried out as part of her undergraduate studies on “Consumer Perception on Regulations Relating to the Welfare of Farm Animals in Turkey”

She writes: ‘This event was a great experience for me to give a speech to such large audience and have a chance to interact with many students through the country. I believe that my under graduate study added some value to raise awareness about the welfare of farm animals in the field of Animal Science. I plan to extend my study on animal welfare and built my future carrier in this topic through the MSc program. I hope to get further chance to collaborate with UFAW in the future.’
