With support from the UFAW, UNAM has established the UFAW-UNAM LINK group. One of the first activities of the group, in addition to distributing information about UFAW meetings and scholarships, has been to organise a series of UFAW seminars on sustainability, animal behaviour and welfare at which researchers and postgraduate students from the School of Veterinary Medicine and the wider university have presented their work. These proved popular and have seen increasing numbers of staff and students attending. Talks have included:
- Individuality in cattle, by PhD student Norhan Cortés
- Animal Welfare as the 4th pillar of sustainability, by MSc student Nahieli Silva
- Conservation of the prairie dog and sustainable production in the arid grasslands of the Janos Biosphere Reserve, by Dr Eduardo Ponce Guevara
In addition the group have given presentations to 1st year undergraduate students on the work of UFAW and its sister charity HSA and how they could get involved in advancing animal welfare science and the grants , awards and scholarships the charities offer.
UNAM has also set up a UFAW-Link student group. After asking for expressions of interest in running this group, three bright and enthusiastic undergraduate students were selected: Vivian Huacuja, Ilse Reyes and Noemi Gonzalez. They joined the UFAW-UNAM LINK team of Drs Francisco Galindo, Fernanda Pérez and Giuliana Miguel and have been very actively involved in the LINK group’s activities.
Gustavo Flores (OIE animal welfare centre), Noemi Gonzalez (1st year undergraduate student), Giuliana Miguel, Francisco Galindo, Vivian Huacuja (3rd year undergraduate student), Ilse Reyes (2nd year undergraduate student), and Fernanda Pérez (Administrative Assistant at OIE animal welfare centre) and Poncho.
