More information on the welfare aspects of genetic diseases and conditions, what they are and why they cause pain or discomfort, is now available.
Over sixty new and updated genetics-related health and welfare conditions have been added to the Genetic Welfare Problems pages of UFAW’s website over the last year and the site includes conditions that affect fish, birds and guinea pigs as well as dogs, cats, horses and rabbits.
Tackling genetic welfare problems requires a team approach by breeders, geneticists, vets, pet owners and others. By providing information, that will inform the choices of breeders and prospective owners, UFAW hopes to reduce the severity and incidence of breed-related welfare problems in companion animals.
