The conference will take place in the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS). Founded in 1976, and part of the University of Porto, ICBAS is a multidisciplinary school specializing in the life sciences including medicine, veterinary science and aquatic sciences. Porto is the second largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon. It is the capital of the Porto District, and one of the Iberian Peninsula's major urban areas.

Located along the Douro River, in the north west of Portugal, it is one of Europe’s oldest cities dating back as a settlement to before the time of the Roman Empire. Founded by the Celts, it’s combined Celtic-Latin name, Portus Cale, is thought to be the origin of the name Portugal.

In 1996, Porto’s historic centre was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Architectural highlights of the city included the cathedral, Sé do Porto, it’s oldest surviving building which dates back to the 12th century, together with the romanesque Church of Cedofeita and the gothic church Igreja de São Francisco. Other highlights the include baroque Cleric church and tower (Igreja e Torre dos Clérigos), the 19th century Stock Exchange Palace (Palácio da Bolsa), the tile-adorned and still working São Bento railway station, which is in the centre of the city and the gardens of the Palacio de Cristal which are next-door ICBAS, the conference venue.

Another place to visit, which is also very close to ICBAS is the National Museum Soares dos Reis.

Food and drink
Port wine is probably Porto’s most famous export. A fortified sweet red wine, often served with dessert, although it also comes in dry, semi-dry, and white varieties. Port is produced from grapes grown in the vineyards that run alongside the Douro River, and is the third oldest protected wine region in the world (since 1756). A visit to one of the many Port Cellars from which the wine was stored and shipped from is generally concerned a must do for visitors to Porto.

Porto is home to a number of regional dishes, the most traditional of which is Tripas à Moda do Oporto or tripe (the lining of cow’s stomach), white beans, carrots and rice. Another is Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá - a casserole of dried or salted cod, potatoes, eggs, olives, olive oil, and onion.

A more recent and very popular dish is the francesinha. A type of toasted sandwich, it is made up of layers of sausage and steak, covered with melted cheese and served in a beer-based sauce. It often comes with an egg on top.

And not to be missed is a Pastel de Nata, a favourite across Portuguese. These sweet crisp and flaky puff pastry tarts are filled with egg custard and dusted with cinnamon and are excellent with a coffee.
