Travel and Accommodation

Accommodation
Porto offers a wide range of hotels, apartments and hostels that people can stay in, although there are few large hotel chains close to the conference venue. Instead, the nearest hotels tend to be smaller, boutique hotels. The conference venue is in the Miragaia neighbourhood of Porto.

One of the closest hotels to the venue is Vilar Oporto (***), which is a six-minute walk away. Room prices range from Euro 112 per night for a single room with breakfast. We have arranged a discount for conference delegates who choose to stay at this hotel. Please email  reservas@vilaroportohotel.pt and quote the code UFAW-2024 to claim a 5% discount

To find a hotel, we suggest searching ‘hotels near ICBAS, Porto’ in Google maps. Discount booking sites such as TripAdvisor, Booking.com or the hotel’s own website can then be used to book a room.

We recommend that you book your accommodation at an early stage due to limited room availability, and to ensure you get the best possible price and place to stay.

Porto City Tax
Since March 2018, Porto City Council has introduced a city tax for tourists staying overnight in Porto. €2.00 city tax will be charged per person/night paid directly to the hotel.

Travelling to Porto

By Air
Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) (Porto Airport) is an international airport located 11km (6.8 miles) northwest of the centre of Porto. It is the second largest airport in the country. More information can be found here.

The airport is served by Line E of the Porto Metro (Purple line). This links the airport to Porto city centre (and terminates at Trindade, from which a Line D will take you to the heart of the old city, and the São Bento stop (Yellow line)), and to high-speed trains at Campanhã railway station. STCP buses also link the airport and the city. There is also a bus that operates all night from Porto city centre to the airport. Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is accessible via the A41 and A28 motorways, and the EN13 highway (using the EN107 access way).

By Rail
Porto is connected to Portugal’s capital Lisbon, and other main cities in the country, by fast trains “Alfa-Pendular” and Intercity. A direct connection to Vigo in Galicia-Spain is also operated from Porto. More information can be found here.

By Taxi
A taxi between the airport and the centre will cost between €20-25 and take 30 minutes. Please be aware that many taxis will not take card payments.

Travelling around Porto
Porto is well served by buses and a Metro system:

The closest bus stop to the conference venue (ICBAS) are Palácio (served by the 12M, 13M, 200, 201, 207, 507 and 601 buses) and Hosp. St. António (served by the 12M, 13M, 200, 201 and 207 buses).

The closest Metro station is São Bento (Line D - Yellow line) which is a 20-minute walk from ICBAS.

Porto also has a tram system, which was built in 1895. Three routes remain, one of which will take you from the city centre along to the Douro river to the mouth of the estuary in 30 minutes and it’s beach (Line 1 - Passeio Alegre, Foz do Douro). Fare for a single trip is €3.50.

Porto.CARD - Official City Pass
Probably the best way to travel around and explore the city is through the Porto.CARD. This gives an option of free and unlimited access to all public transport (with transport option) and free or discounted access to a range of museums and monuments and discounts at participating restaurants and shops. Valid for 1, 2, 3 or 4 days and available from €6.00.
