Professor Bas Rodenburg Appointed Joint Editor-in-Chief of UFAW Journal Animal Welfare

The UFAW journal Animal Welfare is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Bas Rodenburg as its new joint Editor-in-Chief, beginning January 2025. Bas, a long-standing Section Editor of the journal with extensive expertise in animal welfare science, will co-lead the journal alongside current Editor-in-Chief, Dr Birte Nielsen.

Bas is Professor of Animal Welfare at the Department of Population Health Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University in the Netherlands. He brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his new role.

Commenting on his appointment, Bas said:
I am very happy to take up the EiC role for Animal Welfare and to work with Birte and the team to develop the journal further. Animal Welfare plays a central role in communicating about animal welfare science, and the development towards full open access in the past year has only amplified this role. I would like to thank Huw for all his work and look forward to a bright future for Animal Welfare.”

The new joint-EIC will replace Dr Huw Golledge who served as joint Editor-in-Chief since 2020. Huw guided the journal through a transformative period that included its transition to open access, online-only publication, a steady increase in submissions, and the expansion of the Editorial Board to include experts from a wide range of animal welfare disciplines.

Bas’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Animal Welfare. His deep understanding of the journal’s mission and dedication to advancing animal welfare science put him in an ideal position to steer the journal’s ongoing growth and influence.

In welcoming Bas to the new role, Huw said:
I’m delighted to welcome Bas to this role. His expertise and vision make him the perfect choice to help drive Animal Welfare's ongoing success. It’s been a privilege to be involved with the journal these past 5 years and I’m delighted with what we’ve achieved since I took up the EiC role in 2020. I look forward to seeing what the journal continues to achieve under Bas and Birte’s leadership.

The Animal Welfare team extends its gratitude to Huw for his exceptional contributions and looks forward to the continued advancement of the journal under the leadership of Birte and Bas.
