Large Research Grants
Open for Application
UFAW is concerned with the welfare of farm, companion, laboratory, captive wild animals, and with free-living wild animals whose welfare is compromised by humans.
Each year, a limited amount of money is available to support larger scientific research projects, applying for over £5,000 of funding.
UFAW aims to encourage high quality research that is likely to lead to substantial improvements in animal welfare. UFAW seeks to promote both fundamental and applied research. This should be aimed at providing new insight into the subjective mental experiences of animals relevant to their welfare, understanding their needs and preferences, or be more applied research aimed at developing practical solutions to animal welfare problems.
Applications for research funding of less than £5,000 should be made via the Small Research Grant Application.
If you are seeking financial support for: attending or organising educational or scientific meetings, lectures, courses, or training visits; or for other small (non-research) projects in support of UFAW’s objectives, please use the UFAW Travel, Training and Other Events application form.
For projects looking into the welfare of farmed animals during transport, at markets, or during slaughter, please consider applying for a grant from our sister charity, the Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) instead, as these are core areas for the HSA.
How to apply
Please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page and read carefully the Terms and Conditions for UFAW Research Grants, before submitting an application.
The UFAW Large Research Grant is open for all individuals/organisations worldwide, to support scientific research projects to improve or advance the welfare of animals.
Completed application forms are accepted throughout the year. However, please ensure that any request for funding is submitted at least two months before the project start date. Applications received outside of this timeframe will not be eligible for funding.
Please note: animal welfare must be the main focus. We do not support projects focused on e.g. conservation or the improvement of livestock yield.
Applications are assessed on their merits for animal welfare, their scientific quality, and also in relation to other applications (received or already funded).
