UFAW 3Rs Liaison Group (formerly the PHHSC)

Formed by UFAW in 1998, the UFAW 3Rs Liaison Group is a coalition of animal welfare organisations, pharmaceutical companies and research organisations. The aim of the Group is to improve the welfare of laboratory animals by identifying areas where research is needed and to fund research leading to practical solutions that advance the welfare of laboratory animals.
The UFAW 3Rs Liaison Group is an important initiative in UFAW’s work of promoting the Three Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) with regard to the use of animals in research.
UFAW 3Rs Liaison Group Research Studentships are awarded to graduates based at research institutions in the British Isles to undertake three year programmes of research leading to a degree at the doctorate level in any aspect of the Replacement, Reduction or Refinement of laboratory animal use. To date, the Group has funded five studentships:
- Laboratory rabbit housing: an investigation of the social and physical environment. This study investigated the needs of rabbits for social contact and various enrichment options. (Started 1999, finished 2002.)

- Assessing the practicalities and welfare implications of training laboratory primates. (Started 2003.)
